President, World Union for Progressive Judaism
Senior Advisor to the Union for Reform Judaism (URJ) on Policy & Strategy
Former US Ambassador at Large for International Religious Freedom (2015-2017)

Rabbi Saperstein has been at the forefront of religious and Jewish action in America for over 40 years, as an attorney, a university lecturer on issues related to Church–State law and Jewish Law, and as the Director of the Religious Action Center of Reform Judaism. He has also been prominent in a number of interfaith and public interest organisations. He has appeared on most major US television news and talk shows, has been interviewed by television, radio, and print media in over fifteen countries, and his articles and books have appeared across the world.
He currently serves as the President of the World Union for Progressive Judaism, as a Senior Fellow at the Georgetown University School of Foreign Service’s Center for Jewish Civilization, as well as the Senior Advisor for Strategy and Policy for the Union for Reform Judaism. For over two years (2015-2017), he served as the US Ambassador at Large for International Religious Freedom, carrying out his responsibilities as his country’s chief diplomat on religious freedom issues. He was described by Newsweek Magazine as “the most influential rabbi in America.”
This talk draws on his tenure at the State Department, assessing the resurgence of anti-Semitism and growth of Islamophobia, the danger to free speech and religious liberty of anti-blasphemy and defamation of religion laws, and the growth of grassroots interfaith responses to enhancing religious freedom.
