Since its establishment 30 years ago the Victorian Council of Christians and Jews has been at the forefront of interfaith dialogue in Melbourne. The Grass Roots Dialogue Project is the latest program initiated by the CCJ to promote engagement between Christians and Jews. The Project offers a “taster” of what dialogue is about to members of Christian and Jewish communities on their home turf. It is sending trained presenters into churches and synagogues to share their personal stories, to describe how their faith tradition impacts their lives and has led them to become involved in this interfaith program. Each presentation will involve both a Jew and a Christian. It will include time for Q&A when members of the congregation can relate directly to their guests. This may be the first opportunity for many Christians and Jews in our communities to address someone from the other faith specifically about their religious tradition. We hope that the Project will contribute towards creating a spirit of respect between religions and awaken an interest in increasing interfaith engagement among the participants.
